Sherwood feels Tottenham star ‘wasn’t brave enough’ against Everton and cost his side

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has questioned the performance of Guglielmo Vicario against Everton at the weekend.

Tottenham picked up a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park and they will be disappointed to have dropped two points in the end. The North London outfit were undoubtedly the better team and they should have picked up a victory.

Sherwood has now slammed the Italian goalkeeper for his vulnerability when it comes to dealing with set pieces. He struggled against set pieces recently in the cup game against Manchester City as well and it is now evident that the summer signing has a major weakness in his game.

Opposition players are now targeting him during free kicks and corners. Both Manchester City and Everton have now benefited from targeting the 27-year-old in recent weeks.

The former Spurs boss feels that the Italian goalkeeper will have to be braver with his approach while dealing with set pieces.

“He was like a fish, he was in the net,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions (03/02/24 at 2:40 pm). “I mean he has gone so far back that he has to step forward and he has to put some pressure on Branthwaite and make him flinch first.

“But there was only one person flinching, and that was Vicario, unfortunately. But it’s not only this game, he is going to get targeted now, especially from corners.

“At the end there, when he needed to be brave, he wasn’t brave enough. When nowhere near him, he is quality. He goes and takes anything.”

The Italian will be fully aware of his mistake against Everton, and there is no doubt that he will be working to cut out the flaws from his game and bounce back strongly in the coming weeks. His shot stopping and distribution has been outstanding since joining the club, and there is no doubt that he is one of the best keepers in the league right now.

If he can sort out his set piece issues, he could develop into a top class goalkeeper.

Tottenham fans will certainly be happy with how their summer signing has performed this season and they will hope that he can improve going forward.
