Sheffield United latest signing opens up about ‘conflict’ with club doctor

It’s evident that Ivo Grbic’s beginning at Sheffield United since joining in January hasn’t been the most optimistic.

The Croatian goalkeeper, brought in by Chris Wilder as the club’s new number one, endured a tough debut, conceding five goals against Brighton after being thrust into action unexpectedly. Wilder shouldered the responsibility for that decision, emphasising that it was his call.

Following his debut, Grbic was selected to play against Crystal Palace but had to leave the field due to a concussion, which understandably frustrated him at the time.

In an interview with the Croatian outlet Vecernji List, Grbic disclosed his initial displeasure with the club doctor’s decision, before eventually recognising that it was indeed the right call.

“When I got hit, I thought it was no big deal. But the club doctor saw that something was wrong and forbade me to continue the match. According to my answers to his questions, he noticed the symptoms of a concussion.

We even had a small conflict on the field because I wanted to continue the game. But when I came to the bench, I immediately felt a headache and dizziness. The doctor was right and it’s good that I listened to him.”

Grbic is anticipated to be selected again tonight as United takes on Arsenal at Bramall Lane. The Croatian goalkeeper has conceded 14 goals in the four games he has participated in so far, and a clean sheet against a formidable Gunners side would certainly be welcomed tonight.

Chris Wilder brought in a goalkeeper with good reason, and although Grbic’s tenure in Sheffield hasn’t unfolded as expected thus far, he should prove to be a solid signing in the long run.

With Wes Foderingham yet to secure a new contract, and its status possibly uncertain, it was imperative for Sheffield United to secure a goalkeeper for the upcoming seasons. Hopefully, Grbic can now have an uninterrupted opportunity to establish himself and carve out a reputation at Bramall Lane.
