Salernitana president Danilo Iervolino has disclosed the background behind the club’s choice of hiring Filippo Inzaghi. The Italian icon found himself released by Reggina at the start of the 2023/24 season and will now take outgoing Paulo Sousa’s place in the Granata dugout.

Fifty-year-old Inzaghi was presented as Salernitana’s new coach, and Iervolino took the chance to reveal why he opted to onboard him during the ceremony. However, he first took the chance to praise Sousa first.

“He’s a serious and concrete man who works for the right things. I would be ungrateful if I didn’t thank Mr. Sousa. I’m not interested in the controversies relating to his links with Napoli, which delegitimized the team and the sporting director. He declared that we had signed strangers. I don’t want comment. I’m interested in sporting results. Sousa was sacked because the results were not those hoped for. Inzaghi strongly believes in this squad and struck me with his enthusiasm.” (via Tuttomercatoweb)

The Campania outfit executive went on to add to his decision.

“I wanted to do a casting, but we stopped at the first coach after speaking with Inzaghi. We talked about the potential of the team which, in my opinion, can play a spectacular game and propose different schemes. At the same time, we have to be pragmatic to bring home the results. He has a nice outlook, which practicality can go hand in hand with ours.”

As one of the three winless teams this season alongside Udinese and Cagliari, Salernitana hope the signing of Inzaghi will spark an air of positivity as the Serie A campaign enters the ninth matchday following the international break.
