Former Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi admits Milan must regret parting company with Hakan Calhanoglu, but ‘these things happen in football, for example, I didn’t sign Andrea Pirlo.’

The Turkey international has become one of Inter‘s key players this season, having already contributed to 10 goals in Serie A.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 29-year-old has also rejected an offer from Saudi Pro League Al Hilal.

Sacchi, a former Italy and Milan coach, spoke about Calhanoglu’s performance with Inter in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He is doing really well and he’s doing a lot. You see him in all areas of the pitch,” said the 77-year-old.

Calhanoglu joined Inter on a free transfer in 2021, after the end of his contract with Milan. Should the Rossoneri regret not extending his contract?

“Looking backwards, yes, but these situations frequently happen in football,” admitted Sacchi.

“For example, I was offered Andrea Pirlo when I was a football director, but I didn’t sign him. And then, you saw what he became. Calhanoglu had already proved to be strong at Milan but he was playing as a Trequartista. Now it’s different, he has become a leader.

“He is complete and can cover all roles in midfield. He moves smartly, he knows when he has to make short passes or play long balls. I repeat he’s a modern footballer,” continued Sacchi.

“As a Regista, he is among the top three in the world. He has improved incredibly and has proved that you can be successful only with hard work and self-belief. He is a leader and knows how to guide the team even in Champions League games.”

Who have been the best Registas in modern football?

“Pirlo was great, like Xavi in Guardiola’s Barcelona,” Sacchi replied.

“The same goes for Luka Modric, even if he’s more a Mezzala than a Regista. I really like Man City’s Rodri, but there aren’t many footballers playing in this position currently. I enjoyed watching Lobotka at Napoli last season, but I feel he’s had a drop. “

Calhanoglu has scored 20 goals in 116 appearances with the Nerazzurri since joining the club on a free transfer in 2021. He has recently extended his contract with the Serie A giants and his current deal runs out in June 2027.
