Inter captain Lautaro Martinez has scored 22 goals in 23 league games this term and has a realistic hope of reaching the Serie A record set by Ciro Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain.

The Argentinian star shined in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A clash with Lecce on Sunday, netting a brace as the club cruised to a 4-0 victory in Puglia. The goals were the striker’s 21st and 22nd of the league campaign, making him comfortably the leader in the Capocannoniere race.

With Inter still having a game in hand against Atalanta, Simone Inzaghi’s side have 13 matches between now and the end of the season. The club hold a nine-point lead over second place Juventus, and can extend that to 12 by beating Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

TMW highlights how Lautaro now has 13 matches to score 14 goals, which would tie the record of 36 set by Higuain at Napoli in the 2015-16 season and Immobile at Lazio in the 2019-20 campaign.

Considering that only two of his 22 goals this term have been from the penalty spot, he has a strong shot of reaching the record if he keeps up this pace and starts taking spot kicks for the remainder of the season.
