Dejan Lovren today has announced his decision to retire from the Croatia national squad in an Instagram post to his followers.

The 33-year-old who spent seven years on Merseyside, winning the Uefa Champions League, Uefa Super Cup, Premier League and the FIFA Club World Cup was a stalwart of the Croatian defence which has seen the side reach unexpected heights.

Lovren was a key player for the side throughout the last two World Cup appearances which saw Croatia narrowly miss out on becoming world champions in 2018 after a 4-2 defeat to France, before reaching the semi-finals of the competition in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The defender made a total of 78 appearances for his country, in a career spanning over 13 years, during an era many would regard as the golden generation of Croatian football, playing alongside the likes of Luka Modric, Joska Gvardiol, Ivan Perisic and Mateo Kovacic to name a few.

The defender will now aim to focus solely on club football in the French Ligue 1 for Olympique Lyon after his transfer to the side last summer from Russian outfit Zenit St Petersberg for a reported €2million.
