Former Bayern Munich star makes bold Harry Kane claim

Former Bayern Munich star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger suggested the club won't land Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer. 

"Bayern Munich, of course, would like to sign Harry Kane, but I also know that Bayern is not a club who will pay as much money as maybe the owner of Tottenham is asking for," Schweinsteiger said during a Thursday appearance on TalkSport, per Alex Young of the Evening Standard. "So there will be one guy [at Bayern] who puts the fist on the table and says, 'No, we are not paying so much,' but they’re looking for a striker, that’s for sure." 

It was reported in late June that the German giants had a verbal offer of roughly $76.5M plus add-ons for Kane rejected by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. For a piece published on June 27, football reporter Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian noted Levy could want as much as approximately $127M in a transfer fee for the three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner who is out of contract after the upcoming season. 

Schweinsteiger shared his take after it was said Wednesday that Tottenham offered Kane a new contract that would "significantly" increase his salary. David Hytner and Steinberg of The Guardian added at that time that Kane "has no immediate intention to sign (the deal) and will certainly not do so while the transfer window remains open" through Sept. 1. 

Kane turns 30 years old on July 28 and is just 48 career Premier League goals away from breaking the all-time record held by Alan Shearer. However, the England captain who reportedly wanted to join Manchester City two summers ago is also looking to win a significant club trophy for the first time in his career. 

"Also for him, he has to ask himself, does he want to win a title in his life and his career as a football player? Like a championship or a Champions League," Schweinsteiger explained about Kane possibly joining the 2022-23 Bundesliga winners. "I know he’s a person who likes to have his family and friends around him, and Munich is the best place for it. You have a beautiful area around where you can live, where your family can grow up, it’s safe." 

Assuming Schweinsteiger is correct about Bayern not meeting Levy's valuation for Kane, the prolific goal-scorer may have to wait until next July to head elsewhere. Manchester United reportedly have moved on from pursuing Kane, and Real Madrid likely are planning to acquire Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe either this summer or at some point after the 2023-24 campaign.
