Could Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy be Manchester City’s ideal left-back? The French defender played a key role in Carlo Ancelotti’s teams UEFA Champions League quarter-final victory over Manchester City. Now, a recent report has linked Pep Guardiola’s side with a potential move for the Real Madrid defender.

A report from L’Equipe, which was relayed by Get French Football News, indicates that Manchester City is amongst a host of teams interested in signing Ferland Mendy. Furthermore, it is also reported that Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are all interested in signing the French international.

As a player, Ferland Mendy may be the ideal left-back for Manchester City.

As it stands this season, Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake have been preferred at left-back by Pep Guardiola. Both players have shone in the role at times this season. But the pair have vastly different attributes when they are called upon at left-back. Gvardiol is better in possession than Nathan Ake. But it could be argued that Ake brings more defensive steel to the position than Gvardiol.

But Ferland Mendy would bring a different set of attributes to the position of he were to arrive at the Etihad. As a recognised left-back, the champions would finally have a specialist in the role. It has long been a position of need for Manchester City. With his defensive ability and acumen, it is likely that Mendy would be an upgrade on both Gvardiol and Ake. If he were to arrive, it could potentially see Ake or Gvardiol move to the heart of City’s defence. That may create a surplus in centre backs in the Manchester City squad, but City’s defence would be stronger if Mendy did arrive.

It remains to be seen if Manchester City do dip into the transfer market for a left-back this summer. If they did Ferland Mendy could be the ideal candidate to slot in at left-back.
