Bayern Munich to reignite interest in infamous Erik ten Hag target

Manchester United will strengthen their midfield this summer as there are question marks over the futures of several players.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay all have uncertain futures at the club and Sofyan Amrabat will return to Fiorentina after an unsuccessful season-long loan.

Erik ten Hag made it his priority to reinforce United’s midfield when he took over roughly two year ago, signing both Casemiro and Eriksen in his first window.

The pair forged a strong partnership in the middle in the Dutchman’s first campaign but in his second season, youngster Kobbie Mainoo has been the shining light in the middle third.

Frenkie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder, was Ten Hag’s first-choice target in 2022 but despite a three-month-long transfer saga, the Netherlands international ended up staying at the Catalan giants.

Now, almost two years on, De Jong is still being linked with moves away from the Spotify Camp Nou and he’s even sporadically paired with a move to Old Trafford.

As the summer transfer window edges closer, it is now being reported that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are considering reigniting their interest in De Jong this summer.

Bayern Munich were one of the sides said to be competing for De Jong’s signature back in 2022 and now, the Allianz Arena club could be preparing another move.

Bayern are without a manager at the end of the season, with Thomas Tuchel, who is a big admirer of the former Ajax starlet, set to depart next month.

According to Spanish outlet Relevo, Bayern could go back in for De Jong this summer and a deal would cost less than it would have two years ago.

As per the report, as little as €60m would be enough to sign De Jong this summer, with Barcelona making a desperate bid to secure funds to balance their books.

It’s the same story as two years ago when Barcelona pulled all the stops to get their highest earner off the wage bill but resistance from the player made it difficult logistically.

There are no signs of De Jong changing his stance anytime soon as he continues to look very settled in Barcelona with his family.
