James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Carolina Hurricanes forward Teuvo Teravainen is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his broken left hand, the team announced Saturday.

Teravainen, 28, sustained the injury after being slashed by New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau during the third period of Carolina's 4-3 overtime victory on Wednesday. The Hurricanes hold a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series heading into Game 4 on Sunday afternoon.

"The guy absolutely tomahawk chops him," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said of how Teravainen was injured. "It's a tomahawk chop. We just watched it. ... So I'm a little (angry), I'll be honest with you."

Teravainen, 28, totaled 37 points (12 goals 25 assists) in 68 games this season.

A 2015 Stanley Cup champion with Chicago, Teravainen has totaled 406 points (130 goals, 276 assists) in 594 career games with the Blackhawks and Hurricanes.
