Hockey Hall of Fame removing Brad Aldrich's name from Stanley Cup

Following the unveiling of the findings of an independent investigation into how the Chicago Blackhawks handled sexual assault allegations made against former video coach Brad Aldrich back in 2010, Blackhawks general manager and president of hockey operations Stan Bowman stepped away from the organization, and team chairman Rocky Wirtz requested that Aldrich's name be removed from the Stanley Cup.

Aldrich worked for the Blackhawks when they won the title for the 2009-10 season.

Per the league's website, the Hockey Hall of Fame will be taking Aldrich's name off the storied trophy.

"Aldrich's involvement with the team during the 2010 season has cast a pall on the players' extraordinary work that year," Wirtz wrote in the letter. "The names of some of hockey's most talented athletes appear on the Stanley Cup. But so does the name 'Brad Aldrich' whose role as video coach made him eligible for the engraving. His conduct disqualified him, however, and it was a mistake to submit his name. We are sorry we allowed it to happen.

"I am humbly requesting that the Hockey Hall of Fame consider 'x-ing' out his name on the Stanley Cup. While nothing can undo what he did, leaving his name on the most prestigious trophy in sports seems profoundly wrong."

The Blackhawks were ultimately fined $2 million for "inadequate internal procedures and insufficient and untimely response in the handling of matters" regarding the accusations against Aldrich, and Florida Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville resigned Thursday night for his role in turning a blind eye to allegations made by former player Kyle Beach more than a decade ago.
