Detroit Red Wings sign Dominik Kubalik to two-year contract with $2.5M cap hit

Kubalik is coming off a two-year deal with a $3.7 million cap hit, a contract he had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Originally an RFA, the Blackhawks chose not to qualify him, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Kubalik is coming off his weakest season since joining the NHL in 2019. He had just 15 goals, 17 assists and 32 points in 78 games for the Blackhawks last season, totals that were lower than his previous season which was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, he was a Calder Trophy nominee in 2020 when he scored 30 goals for Chicago, so there’s still potential there.

Kubalik joins a long list of acquisitions for the Red Wings so far Wednesday, as Detroit has brought in Andrew Copp, Ben Chiarot and Olli Maata as well. Detroit also made a deal to bring in goalie Ville Husso, who the Red Wings immediately signed to an extension as well.
