Arizona Coyotes’ Travis Dermott likely out for rest of the season with upper-body injury
? Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

An early end to the 2023-24 campaign for one of the top defensemen on the Arizona Coyotes’ roster.

On Tuesday, head coach André Tourigny told the media that defenseman Travis Dermott is likely to be out of the lineup for the remainder of the regular season.

Dermott was hit from behind by Luke Kunin on Sunday night in a game between the Coyotes and the San Jose Sharks. The 27-year-old had to leave the game early, and did not return. He was being evaluated on Monday for an upper-body injury.

Dermott has had a rough 2023-24 campaign. The Newmarket, Ontario native has played just 50 games, thanks to injuries, illness and being a healthy scratch a couple of times. He has scored just two goals and seven points in his first season in Arizona.

Dermott is on a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Coyotes.

Tourigny also mentioned that forward Nick Bjugstad is going to miss some time, saying that the 31-year-old is not out day-to-day, as “It’s a little bit longer than that.”

It is not publicly known what is ailing Bjugstad, but if it is as severe as Tourigny suggests, Bjugstad might also miss the final five games of the season. It is a shame, as Bjugstad has been having one of his best seasons in the NHL. The Minneapolis native has scored 22 goals and 45 points in 76 games, and had time to match his career-high 49 points that he set during the 2017-18 season with the Florida Panthers.

Bjugstad is in the first season of a two-year deal with Arizona, with an AAV of $2.1 million.

In response, the team has called up defenseman Maksymilian Szuber and forward Jan Jenik from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. Jenik has appeared in 18 games for the Coyotes, last playing for Arizona on Nov. 22, 2023. Szuber has yet to make his NHL debut.

The Coyotes (33-39-5) are seventh in the Central Division, 20 points ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks.
