Vikings have two open roster spots after releasing CB John Reid
USA TODAY Sports

With training camp right around the corner, the Vikings have a pair of usable spots open on their 90-man roster. They've had one available for a while and added another on Wednesday by releasing journeyman veteran cornerback John Reid.

The Vikings have 89 players on their roster, but one of those is French rookie OLB Junior Aho, who joined the team as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. He does not count towards the 90-man roster during the offseason.

Reid, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Falcons in May. The former Penn State standout was a Texans fourth-round pick in 2020 and has bounced around since then, going from Houston to Seattle to Atlanta to Tennessee, then back to Atlanta, before spending this offseason with Minnesota. In his career, the 5'10" nickel corner has appeared in 27 games with four starts.

It's interesting that the Vikings decided to waive Reid ahead of training camp despite having significant questions at corner. They clearly didn't see him as a potential option at that position. Byron Murphy Jr., Akayleb Evans, Mekhi Blackmon, and Andrew Booth Jr. feel like the top four corners on the roster, with Joejuan Williams, Kalon Barnes, Tay Gowan, and three undrafted rookies looming further down the depth chart.

Now we wait to see what GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah does with these open roster spots. Rookies report to training camp on Sunday, followed by the rest of the roster on Tuesday the 25th.
