Troy Aikman gives honest thoughts on possibly becoming an NFL GM

It didn’t take former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman long to make the jump from the NFL to the broadcast booth.

And while he’s had a successful career as a broadcaster, many have wondered if Aikman will ever transition from the sports media world to an NFL front office — a decision Aikman recently admitted crossed his mind a few times before but is likely not in his future.

“There’s still a part of me, I think, that down the road — the talk has always come up about whether or not I want to be a general manager,” Aikman said during an interview with 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas. “And I think that has passed. But there may come a time that I’d be interested in just helping out with a club, with an organization, and not necessarily in an official capacity. I think that would be enjoyable.”

Twenty-three years removed from his playing days, the 56-year-old Aikman has admitted in the past that while he’s confident he could do the job, he’s not at a point in his life that he would want to immerse himself in a 365-day-per-year job like an NFL GM.

After 20 seasons with Fox, Aikman and broadcast partner Joe Buck joined ESPN as the new voices of “Monday Night Football” in March of last year. While he still lives in Dallas and appears to be content with his post-retirement career, Aikman did hint that he could walk away from the broadcasting booth in the not-too-distant future.

“I am still broadcasting and I’m still living in Dallas, and I very much love the state of Texas and I love living in Dallas, but I don’t know how much longer I’ll do it,” Aikman said. “I’ve got a pretty good idea. And not to suggest that I’m retiring anytime in the near future, but I’ve got an idea as to when I believe that I’ll retire.”
