Texans QB Keenum On Representing Houston: 'It Meant So Much!'
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The city of Houston is quite literally a part of Texans quarterback Case Keenum.

After his record-breaking five-year college career at the University of Houston (2007-11), and claiming the NCAA's all-time leading passer title with 19,217 yards and 155 touchdowns, Keenum began his professional football career with the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2012. That year, his time on the Texans was spent on the practice squad.

In 2013, Keenum started in eight games for the club but did not lead Houston to victory in any of them.

Shortly after, Keenum became known as a journeyman quarterback, playing with the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills, all in his 10-year professional career.

However, it appeared as though Houston could not get enough of Keenum, and he couldn't resist moving back to H-Town. And that is where this story begins.

In March, the Texans signed the veteran quarterback to its roster once again, ten years later. But this time, Keenum has taken on more of a mentor-style role, aiding Texans' rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in his quarterback development, and Keenum's guidance seemed to have worked fairly well for Houston.

Keenum sat in the third-string quarterback position behind Davis Mills while Stroud led the Texans to a 7-6 overall record.

However, the Texans' season was taken by surprise when the impressive rookie quarterback suffered a concussion on Dec. 10 against the New York Jets and was ruled out for the following week.

With their playoff hopes on the line, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans named Keenum as the starting quarterback against the Tennessee Titans, a fellow AFC South contender.

On Sunday, Keenum started for the Texans for the first time since Dec. 28, 2014.

While Keenum's performance wasn't perfect, he ended up getting the job done in overtime as the Texans claimed a 19-16 victory with a game-winning 54-yard field goal from kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn.

Keenum, along with Houston's powerhouse defense, was able to dig the Texans out of a 13-0 hole in the second quarter.

At the conclusion of the game, Keenum recorded 229 passing yard, one touchdown and one pick six.

After the game, Ryans applauded Keenum for his performance on the field.

"Case did a really nice job today," Ryans said. "He was very efficient, keeping us moving, and no play bigger than the play there at the end...to put us in field goal range, it shows Case is just a true professional."

Needless to say, the city of Houston loves Keenum, but the veteran quarterback has never been happier to be back where he started his career.

"It meant so much to me," Keenum said. "I've said this a lot of times...but wearing the name of 'Houston' in the front of my jersey which I've done for a long time, and to get to do it again and represent for our city, for our team, it means a lot. It really does. Second of all, this team, I love these guys."

It is still up in the air whether Keenum will start next week's matchup against the Browns, assuming that Stroud will miss another game with his concussion. However, there is no doubt that Keenum will "stay ready".

"I've been in a lot of situations," Keenum said. "I've been in a lot of systems. I've been in a lot of different games. But God's made me who I am, for this. I'm just trying to be ready, when my number's called. It's like I've said before: 'You don't get ready. You stay ready."
