Texans HC DeMeco Ryans provides positive injury update on QB C.J. Stroud

Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud might return Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, giving Houston a massive boost as it makes its final postseason push.

Stroud returned to practice Wednesday after missing two games with a concussion. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told the media he must clear one more stage of concussion protocol, but he seemed optimistic about his progress.

"Encouraging to have C.J. back at practice," Ryans said. "We're just looking for efficiency, just being able to command the huddle. We're just looking for him to be comfortable in the moment. The main thing is we want to keep the defenders off of him. We don't want him taking another hit."

The New York Times simulator gives Houston (8-7) a 34% chance to make the postseason. However, if the Texans win their next two games, they'll likely secure a wild-card spot. Tankathon notes they have the league's 25th-most difficult remaining schedule.

Still, the Texans need a healthy Stroud. In two games without the second overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, they've averaged 17.5 points per game and are 1-1.

Backup QBs Case Keenum and Davis Mills have split playing time, and each has struggled. Keenum posted a below-average 20.7 QBR, while Mills logged a below-average 49 QBR.

Although he's a rookie, the former Ohio State Buckeye already looks like a Pro Bowler. Entering Week 17, he's tied for 11th in the league in passing TDs (20), 10th in passing yards (3,601) and fifth in passer rating (98.7).

As of Wednesday, oddschecker gives him the best Offensive Rookie of the Year odds (-800) ahead of Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.

If he returns and helps the Texans make their first playoff appearance since 2019, expect him to lock up the award.
