Steelers’ Hines Ward Delivers Hilarious Apology To Arizona For Super Bowl Victory Upon New Sun Devils Job
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers legendary wide receiver, Hines Ward recently accepted the position of wide receivers coach at Arizona State University. Following his illustrious playing career, which included being named Super Bowl XL MVP, Ward has transitioned to coaching to further explore his passion for football. His coaching journey began as an offensive intern with the Steelers in 2017, and since then, Ward has embraced this new chapter with determination and enthusiasm.

Already immersing himself in his role with the Sun Devils, Ward has wasted no time making an impact. In a recent interview with PHNX Sports, he shared his motivation behind accepting the coaching position and expressed his desire to inspire and mentor the next generation of football talent.

"I was sitting at home on the couch, debating if I want to continue coaching. My wife, of course, wanted me to sit at home and be with her and watch The Kardashians all day. Just out of the blue, I get a call from [Coach Kenny Dillingham] and asked me if I was interested in wide receiver job.”

Ward revealed that initially, the decision wasn't easy, especially with his wife hoping he'd spend more time at home, enjoying reality television together. Yet, despite this temptation, his passion for football and coaching remained strong. He credited his faith in God and the unwavering support of his wife for ultimately guiding him in making the decision.

"I relayed it to my wife and thank God it was Phoenix. She said, 'Hey, that might be something. And always, I'm a firm believer, man, God dropped this opportunity in my lap for a reason. I love coaching. I love helping young men. That's really my blessing to these guys. God wanted me to continue to touch young men lives, and not just making them football players, but men in life."

As the interview drew to a close, Ward injected a touch of humor, referencing the Steelers' victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Despite being injured and not making a significant impact on the game, Ward played a crucial role in securing the Steelers' second Super Bowl triumph. In a light-hearted manner, he aimed to reassure fans in his new city and state that they shouldn't hold it against him for being part of the team that defeated them in the big game.

"I apologize for us beating the Cardinals years ago. So don't take that against me. But I enjoy being here at Arizona State. Looking forward to meeting all the guys. I want to be a blessing to these guys. Any advice that I can give them because I have been where they are wanting to go. I don’t want them to make the same mistakes I made.”

Ward's tenure with the Steelers spanned an impressive 14 seasons marked by dominance on the field. Over the course of his career, he amassed 1,000 receptions, accumulating 12,083 receiving yards and 85 touchdowns.

Regarded as one of the greatest players in Steelers history, Ward remains a beloved figure among fans. His remarkable achievements include four Pro Bowl selections, a Super Bowl MVP title, and being a two-time Super Bowl champion. While many Steelers enthusiasts believe Ward should be welcomed into the Hall of Fame, his enshrinement remains uncertain, eliciting mixed opinions among fans.

Steelers’ Hines Ward Not Wanted By His Former Team

Ward had hoped for a call from the Steelers, envisioning a role as a coach, but unfortunately, that call never materialized, and the team moved forward without him. Despite the Steelers actively seeking a new wide receivers coach this offseason, Ward's phone remained silent. Although some speculated about the possibility, it ultimately did not come to fruition.

The Steelers expressed their appreciation for Ward and his contributions to the team, yet they opted to pursue a different direction. Now, Ward is poised to embark on his next chapter with the Sun Devils, eager to demonstrate his coaching prowess with young talent. This development presents an intriguing narrative for Steelers fans who hold Ward dear, providing them with a compelling storyline to follow and support.
