Steelers' draft plans coming into focus after offseason additions

The Pittsburgh Steelers' approach in free agency painted a pretty clear picture of what they might do during the NFL Draft next week. 

It's beginning to look like the six-time Super Bowl champions have things narrowed down to one or two positions with the No. 17 overall pick—offensive tackle or cornerback.

When the offseason began they had some pretty significant needs across the roster. 

They badly needed to improve their offensive line at both guard and tackle, their run defense along the defensive line and to get deeper at several positions including wide receiver, middle linebacker, and safety. 

They have addressed a lot of those needs in free agency, including their most recent move on Tuesday when they reportedly traded for wide receiver Allen Robinson from the Los Angeles Rams.  

Robinson will help address their depth at wide receiver and offer a veteran presence behind Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and second-year player Calvin Austin. 

His acquisition follows a free agency period that saw the Steelers load up on the middle of their defense by re-signing Larry Ogunjobi along the defensive line, while also adding Breiden Fehoko. They also re-did their middle linebackers by saying goodbye to Robert Spillane, Myles Jack and Devin Bush, and signing Elandon Roberts and Cole Holcomb in free agency to go with returning second-year player Mark Robinson. 

They also addressed the interior of the offensive line by making a big splash and signing Isaac Seumalo, the top free agent guard on the market, and adding Nate Herbig for depth. 

Any of those positions could have beee an option at No. 17. And while they still could be, the Steelers have plugged enough holes at those positions that it gives them a pretty clear path to address either offensive tackle or cornerback early in the draft. And perhaps even with a trade up. 

They did add Patrick Peterson at cornerback, but he is simply a replacement for Cam Sutton who departed in free agency for the Detroit Lions. They still have a need for another starter. That could open the door for Christian Gonzalez, Joey Porter Jr., Devon Witherspoon, Deonte Banks or Julius Brents.

With two second-round picks (No. 32 and No. 49), they could also be positioned for a trade-up to land a top tackle, such as Peter Skoronski or Paris Johnson Jr. 

They filled almost every hole on the roster except for those two. That should make the draft decision very easy.
