Steelers' Cam Heyward Wasn’t Pleased With Najee Harris’ Postgame Comments
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers concluded their 2023 season with a disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card game on Monday. Despite showing a lot of heart in the second half, the Bills proved to be legit Super Bowl contenders and the Steelers proved to be the team everyone thought they were.

After the defeat, star running back Najee Harris shared his thoughts on the team needing new in-house rules. Harris clarified that he wasn't referring to coaching rules or any coaching changes, but believed that the team could benefit from being more disciplined and following new rules.

Harris entered this game with high hopes of being the game changing player. However, he struggled to find open holes and the Bills dominated at the line of scrimmage. Harris finished with just 12 carries going for only 37 yards. For the Steelers to have won this game, he needed to have a breakout day.

Steelers Veteran Offers His Perspective

Cam Heyward, a veteran leader of the Steelers, met with members of the media on Tuesday, addressing Harris's call for new rules. Heyward expressed a different perspective.

"I've been around this team a lot. He's come across things that were done a different way. I don't know what's all done on the offensive side of the ball, but more rules don't get it done. Playing better gets it done."

Heyward's message was straightforward and concise. He firmly believes that playoff victories are not solely achieved through rule changes, but through improved performance on the field. This perspective appears to be a reasonable assessment of the situation.

For Heyward, the 2023 season took a significant toll on his body, and his future with the team remains uncertain. While he expresses a desire to return, contract negotiations may be necessary. Heyward understands the business aspect of the NFL and is prepared for the potential changes that might come his way.

However, this season marked Heyward's 13th year in the league, and his lack of playoff success is becoming increasingly frustrating. With only one playoff victory in his tenure, Heyward deserves more postseason achievements.

It's essential to note that Heyward's comments were not meant as a criticism of Harris. In fact, Heyward admitted that he isn't well-versed in what transpires on the offensive side of the ball. Instead, Heyward's focus is on the broader picture, improving the team's overall performance and execution.

As the Steelers entered Buffalo with aspirations of a stunning upset, it became apparent early on that the Bills were operating at a different level. Mason Rudolph's slow start, marked by a costly interception in the red zone, set the tone for the game.

Josh Allen's electrifying 52-yard touchdown run further cemented the Bills' control, establishing a commanding 21-0 lead – a substantial deficit for the Steelers to overcome.

Despite the Steelers' valiant efforts and their ability to make the game intriguing, particularly in the third and late in the fourth quarter, they faltered during crucial moments. Both teams grappled with defensive injuries, with the Bills ultimately showcasing superior execution.

Their safeties effectively neutralized Rudolph's deep passing game. While Rudolph did find his rhythm later in the contest, the early hole proved insurmountable, sealing the Steelers' fate. Although the Steelers displayed tremendous effort, their execution fell short, and the superior team emerged victorious.

The Steelers now face a lengthy offseason filled with rumors and news. The future in Pittsburgh remains uncertain as the franchise's quest for a seventh Super Bowl championship will have to wait until next season. The rumors revolving around Mike Tomlin's future will amplify as well.

In the end, the dialogue between Harris and Heyward highlights the diverse perspectives and expectations within the Steelers organization. As the offseason unfolds, the team will continue its pursuit of improvement, hoping to return to playoff success in the near future.
