San Francisco 49ers make roster move to get to the 90-player limit ahead of rookie minicamp
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers begin their rookie minicamp on Friday, marking the first opportunity for them to put their class of draft picks and undrafted free agents through their paces.

A host of other players looking to earn a roster spot have also been invited to attend, though as it stands the 49er roster is full.

Their roster stood at 92 players entering Wednesday, however, they made a move to trim it, the Niners announcing they have waived defensive lineman Spencer Waege.

Though they have 91 players, the 49ers do not need to make another cut to reach the 90-man limit as offensive lineman Isaac Alarcon is part of the NFL's International Player Pathway program.

But if the 49ers want to sign any tryout player who impresses at minicamp, they will have to make another move.

Those most in jeopardy from a standout tryout player would be the undrafted free agents the 49ers signed in the immediate aftermath of the draft. Save for defensive lineman Evan Anderson, who received a contract with $280,000 in guaranteed money, none of that group can be considered safe.

Much of the attention at rookie minicamp will be focused on first-round pick Ricky Pearsall but, for those who did not hear their name called in the draft, the stakes are significantly higher.
