Latest Cowboys roster move sets the table for potential Zay Jones signing ahead of 2024 NFL season
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

On the same day it was reported the Dallas Cowboys were hosting free agent wide receiver Zay Jones on a visit, veteran Martavis Bryant was released from the team, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Bryant, who was reinstated from suspension by the NFL in 2023, signed with the Cowboys last season but never got to see playing time.

In his first two years in the NFL, Bryant averaged over 60 yards per game and I even listed him as a potential 53-man roster surprise if he was able to turn back the hands of time after so much time away from the game.

The Cowboys clearly don't think it could happen as they're moving on from him before OTAs even begin later in the month.

The move could be interpreted as a sign the Cowboys will likely move on with the Zay Jones addition after having him in the building. However, at the time of this writing, there hasn't been a report that it is indeed happening.

Jones would provide an upgrade over Bryant as he is much more than a roster bubble guy like the latter was: The former second-round pick would be insurance policy in case of injuries and in case Jalen Tolbert doesn't progress going into his third year in the NFL.

Best case scenario, he gives Tolbert a run for his money and ends up playing WR3 after going for over 800 yards in 2022.
