Giants' Dexter Lawrence shares blunt take on blowout loss to Cowboys

New York Giants star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence didn't hold back when discussing Sunday's 40-0 blowout loss at home to the division-rival Dallas Cowboys.

"We got embarrassed," Lawrence told Jared Schwartz of the New York Post. "But you’ve got to own it and move on, don’t let it linger. That’s the message that we’re gonna live by. Just go out and execute. Prepare the same this week as we did last week. I thought we had a good week of practice and meetings, so keep preparing the same way and the results will come."

Following the humiliating defeat at MetLife Stadium, Giants legend and current media personality Tiki Barber questioned the club's effort and focus and also ripped head coach Brian Daboll for resting starters throughout the preseason. Additionally, Daboll earned widespread criticism for leaving starting quarterback Daniel Jones in Sunday's game when the Giants were trailing by 40 points in the fourth quarter.

In short, little went right for Big Blue in Week 1.

As for Lawrence, he signed a four-year contract extension reportedly worth up to $90M with $60M guaranteed this past offseason and was later voted a team captain. He indicated he accepts some responsibility for Sunday's historic loss considering his role as a leader.

"This is early in the season, s--- gonna happen," Lawrence continued. "It’s not gonna define our season if we don’t allow it to is my message. We’re gonna keep fighting, we’re gonna keep preparing, we’re gonna keep doing the right things and come out on top. Just not having excuses. They beat us."

As of early Wednesday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Giants as the favorites (-235, -5.5) to earn a win at the 0-1 Arizona Cardinals this coming Sunday. New York then has to play at a San Francisco 49ers (1-0) side on Sept. 21 that OddsChecker had on Wednesday as the favorite at +350 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII.

"We’ve just got to come back the next week and not let that linger to the following week," Lawrence added about the Giants' mindset.

If teammates don't answer that call, what was a promising Giants season less than a week ago could go up in flames before the end of the month.
