Former No. 1 pick reveals best fit for Bears and it isn't Caleb Williams

For months, the consensus has been that USC standout quarterback Caleb Williams will be the No. 1 pick in April's NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. However, former first-round pick and current NFL Network analyst David Carr believes both Williams and the Bears would be better off without one another.

In fact, the ex-QB believes the Washington Commanders would be the best home for Williams, while the Bears should go in another direction entirely.

"For me, the fit isn't right," Carr said. "I think this offense in Washington fits Caleb better, and I think Jayden Daniels, for me, if I were the Bears, the first pick that would be turned in would be Jayden Daniels."

Since free agency opened, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner has seen his draft stock improve. According to FanDuel, Daniels has the best odds (-150) of going No. 2 in the draft, while only Williams (-2000) has better odds of going No. 1 than the ex-LSU product (+1600).

While ranking Daniels over Williams might sound wild on the surface, it really isn't. Last season, Daniels bested Williams in QBR (95.6 to 82.4), completion percentage (72.2 to 68.6), yards per attempt (11.7 to 9.4) and touchdown-to-interception ratio (40-4 to 30-5).

Carr isn't the first person to question whether or not Williams is the best choice for the Bears at No.1. However, the noise has only grown louder recently, as has the support for Daniels.

Two-time Super Bowl Champion Damien Woody said he'd take Daniels over Williams because he does the "ordinary things" better.

"Give me the quarterback that can recognize, diagnose, be accurate and most importantly, when pressure comes, deliver the ball against man-to-man coverage," Woody said. "Jayden Daniels does that better than Caleb Williams."

Meanwhile, On "Up and Adams" Wednesday, Bears legend Devin Hester threw out the possibility of passing on a quarterback altogether, adding that the franchise should stick with Justin Fields.

"I don't feel like you should go out and draft a quarterback similar to what you already have," Hester said.

The Bears haven't revealed their plans for the No. 1 pick. However, with several options still up in the air and a few weeks of speculation remaining, the days leading up to the draft are guaranteed to be anything but dull.
