Commanders DC Jack Del Rio deletes Twitter account in wake of Jan. 6 comments controversy

The near-one week long saga of Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio's controversial comments regarding the Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection took another turn on Saturday.

Just four days after first getting in hot water for his controversial tweet comparing protests following the killing of George Floyd with the Capitol Insurrection, Del Rio has deleted his Twitter account. In explaining his tweet to reporters on Wednesday, the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and then-Oakland Raiders created a stir with comments regarding the early-2021 riots, referring to the event as a "dust-up".

Del Rio apologized later that day, but on Friday, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera handed down a $100K fine to the 59-year-old.

The Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection committee hearings began in prime time on Thursday night and continue next week. Del Rio is beginning his third season as the defensive coordinator with Washington.
