Arizona Cardinals add former Jets Dynamic running back Michael Carter 11/15/2023
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Arizona Cardinals have claimed Michael Carter off of Waivers. Michael Carter has been with the Jets since 2021, but with Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook ahead of him in the depth chart, it has been difficult for him to get a lot of touches.

Cardinals adding to their Running Back room

Michael Carter was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of North Carolina, and he had a solid rookie campaign, rushing for 639 yards across 14 games. He wasn’t quite as productive last season, even with Breece Hall missing a lot of games due to injury.

This year, Breece Hall has come back healthy, and right before the season started, the Jets added Pro-Bowl running back Dalvin Cook. Carter has mainly been used as a third-down running back in 2023, as he has had just eight rushing attempts for 38 yards through nine games.

Carter is a decent pass-catcher out of the backfield, which became his primary role for New York, tallying 15 catches for 68 yards. He had become expendable due to Breece Hall’s excellent play, and with the addition of Cook, there was really no path for playing time for the UNC product.

Michael Carter is looking for a fresh start

Arizona’s starting running back, James Conner, has had some injury issues this year, so the Cardinals are adding much-needed depth to the backfield. Carter will compete with Emari Demercado and Keontay Ingram for snaps, but he has a better shot at getting more playing time here than he did in New York.
