Stephen A. Smith Claims Bucks Should Trade Damian Lillard If First-Round Exit Occurs

Stephen A. Smith's recent commentary on 'First Take' has sparked discussions about the future of Damian Lillard with the Milwaukee Bucks. Smith expressed his belief that if the Bucks suffer a first-round exit from the playoffs, they should consider trading Lillard.

"If Milwaukee loses, I said, I think you need to consider moving Dame up out of there. I'm not talking about his game. He's not happy there."

"Now he's got a lot of distractions, which are his business, and we wish him nothing but the best, nothing but the best, because a lot of us would not be able to handle it as well as he's handling it."

"And I know he wanted to go to Miami too. Let's call it what it is. I mean, you got all of that going on. That's a lot to deal with. I'm not talking about his game, because I believe in Dame. I'm talking about what he has to go through and psychologically how that situation may not be ideal for him."

While acknowledging Lillard's talent on the court, Smith pointed out that the star point guard may not be happy with his current situation in Milwaukee due to various distractions, including personal matters and trade desires.

Lillard's arrival in Milwaukee was initially met with high hopes, as he brought his exceptional skill set and leadership qualities to the team. However, his first season with the Bucks has been far from ideal, marred by off-court distractions and personal challenges.

Shortly after joining the team, Lillard initiated divorce proceedings with his wife Kay'La Lillard, whom he had been with since their college days, and shared three children with. This upheaval in his personal life undoubtedly added to the pressure and distractions Lillard faced off the court.

Meanwhile, the Bucks themselves endured a turbulent season by their standards, marked by a mid-season coaching change. The team parted ways with Adrian Griffin and brought in Doc Rivers in hopes of turning their season around. However, the coaching transition did not yield the desired results, as the Bucks struggled to find consistency and cohesion under Rivers' leadership.

Heading into the playoffs, the Bucks find themselves facing a formidable opponent in the Indiana Pacers, a team that has had their number throughout the season. The Pacers' dominance over the Bucks in the regular season, winning four out of five matchups, raises concerns about Milwaukee's ability to advance past the first round of the playoffs.

This potential early exit would be a disappointment for a team that held high aspirations, especially considering their previous postseason disappointment as the top seed in the East last year.

Smith's suggestion to explore trading Lillard reflects the uncertainties surrounding the star player's future in Milwaukee and the team's need to reassess their roster if they fail to meet expectations in the playoffs. While Lillard's talent is unquestionable, his happiness and fit within the Bucks organization may be in question, prompting discussions about potential changes to the team's lineup.

As the Bucks navigate through the playoffs and evaluate their postseason performance, the decision-makers within the organization will need to weigh the pros and cons of retaining Lillard and consider potential trade scenarios to address any shortcomings in the team's roster.

Damian Lillard's Off-Court Troubles Has Impacted His Game Too

Damian Lillard's transition to the Milwaukee Bucks hasn't gone as smoothly as anticipated, which is evident in his performance statistics this season. Known for his scoring prowess and playmaking abilities, Lillard's numbers have seen a noticeable decline from his usual elite standards.

Currently, he's averaging 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game, shooting at a 42.4% clip from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc.

One of the primary reasons for Lillard's dip in production could be attributed to the challenge of adjusting to a new team and system. Joining the Bucks after spending his entire career with the Portland Trail Blazers, Lillard has had to acclimate to a different environment, teammates, and coaching style. This transition period often comes with its set of challenges, impacting a player's on-court performance and efficiency.

Additionally, the Bucks' acquisition of Lillard came at a significant cost, with the team parting ways with several key defensive players in exchange. This loss of defensive talent has been evident in the team's performance, particularly on the defensive end of the floor.

The Bucks' struggles on defense were one of the contributing factors to the mid-season firing of head coach Adrian Griffin, as the team sought to address its shortcomings and make necessary adjustments.

However, as the playoffs loom on the horizon, Lillard and the Bucks have an opportunity to turn things around and make a statement. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced throughout the season, the postseason presents a clean slate and a chance for redemption.

With Lillard's track record of clutch performances and ability to elevate his game in high-pressure situations, the playoffs offer a platform for him to showcase his talent and leadership on a grand stage.

As the Bucks prepare to embark on their playoff journey, Lillard will be looking to regain his rhythm and elevate his play to help lead his team to success. With the talent and potential present on the roster, the Bucks have the opportunity to silence doubters and make a deep postseason run with Lillard at the helm.
