Grizzlies trade Juancho Hernangomez to Celtics for Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards

The Boston Celtics reportedly acquired Juancho Hernangomez in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in exchange for Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards and a second-round pick swap in the 2026 NBA Draft, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

This marks the second time Hernangomez has been traded this summer. The Minnesota Timberwolves traded him to Memphis in the Patrick Beverley deal in late August.

The Celtics were looking to slim down some roster spots because the team had 16 contracts for only 15 places. Dunn and Edwards needed more playing time and considering Boston's deep guard rotation, they were unlikely to see consistent time on the court.

Hernangomez is a solid depth option for the Celtics and gives the franchise some more size at forward. He can space the floor but will look to improve his shooting numbers during the 2021-22 campaign.

The 25-year-old averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds last season while shooting 43.5% from the field and 32.7% from deep.

Edwards spent the last two seasons with the Celtics after being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019. Last season, he averaged four points per game on 42.3% shooting from the field.

Meanwhile, Dunn had recently joined the Celtics in a three-team trade with the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings. The 27-year-old appeared in just four games last season due to injury.

Hernangomez is Boston's latest addition this offseason, joining Dennis Schroder, Al Horford, Enes Kanter, Josh Richardson and Bruno Fernando. None of those additions likely make the Celtics true title contenders in the Eastern Conference. However, they're hoping for a better finish than seventh place in the East.
