The Cavaliers and point guard Ricky Rubio seem likely to move on from each other fairly soon, as we relayed earlier.
But how that happens is still very much up in the air.
According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Cavs’ “preferred path” to a resolution with Rubio is using his contract in a trade, as the sides aren’t close on a contract buyout.
Rubio, 33, has not been with the team this season, citing mental health issues. The Cavs have been sensitive to that and reportedly intend to continue to be. Some believe that no matter what happens next, Rubio will not play again for or perhaps again in the NBA.
Rubio is making $6.1 million this season, with a partial guarantee of $4.25 million for next year. He averaged career-lows of 5.2 points and 3.5 assists in 33 appearances last season, one season removed from major knee surgery.
