Yankees add World Series-winning GM as adviser to Brian Cashman

The New York Yankees added the architect of a three-time World Series champion to their front office on Tuesday, announcing the hiring of Brian Sabean as a special advisor to general manager Brian Cashman

Sabean spent three decades as the general manager of the San Francisco Giants, winning World Series titles during the 2010, 2012, and 2014 seasons.

It also brings Sabean's career full circle after he began his front office career as the director of scouting and vice president of player development between the 1986 and 1992 seasons. It was during that time that the seeds of the Yankees' dynasty of the 1990s were planted with the signing, drafting and development of future stars like Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Andy Pettite.

It's a big name, big resume, and big voice to add to the Yankees front office as the pressure to win the World Series continues to mount.

The Yankees have not won a championship -- or league pennant -- since the 2009 season, making it one of the longest World Series droughts in franchise history.

In response to that, the Yankees have spent huge money this offseason by retaining superstar outfielder Aaron Judge and signing free agent starting pitcher Carlos Rodon.

What's interesting here is that for as long as Cashman has been the general manager (25 years), and for as much success as he has had, you have to think that there comes a point where the lack of a championship and the lack of postseason success starts to become too much for the Yankees. Not that his seat would get uncomfortably warm, but that he might need to lose some power or have some different voices around him.

Bringing in somebody as prominent as Sabean certainly falls in line with that. He is not just some random front office advisor. He is an advisor that has a resume that is very similar to Cashman's and has a lot of pull around the league.
