The rumor mill is in full swing as MLB’s August 2 trade deadline approaches. The Chicago White Sox have been included in some rumors. There is strong interest in Cubs’ setup man Mychal Givens, and Jesses Rogers of ESPN identifies the White Sox as a potential fit.

Givens is no stranger to trade rumors. He has pitched for four different teams since 2020. Givens recently stated that he expects to be with the Cubs after the deadline. Nevertheless, it seems as though he will be on the move before August 2.

Rogers also reported that the White Sox “kicked the tires” on Givens last offseason. This doesn’t come as a surprise as Rick Hahn recently stated that bullpen help is one of the team’s priorities at the deadline. With Aaron Bummer unlikely to return until September, the White Sox’s only current left-handed option on the pitching staff is Tanner Banks.

Mychal Givens Could Make Sense For The White Sox

Givens has been great for the Cubs this season. He owns a 2.72 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 19 walks in 39 appearances.

The mileage continues to pile up for Sox reliever Kendall Graveman, who has already logged more innings than he did in all of 2018 and 2019. He’s also approaching his 2021 season total.

The White Sox and Cubs are no strangers to exchanging bullpen arms. They were able to agree to a blockbuster deal at the 2021 deadline that saw Craig Kimbrel join the Sox with Nick Madrigal and Codi Heuer heading to the North Side. The White Sox also acquired Ryan Tepera in exchange for southpaw prospect Bailey Horn.

It’s Now Or Never

Hahn will likely be aggressive at the deadline again to help keep the Chicago White Sox above .500. The club reached that mark for the first time since May 25 after Tuesday night’s win in Colorado. Trades like these, regardless of the player, will be imperative for the Sox’s chances down the stretch of the season.
