Top Prospect Sent In Jack Flaherty Trade Set To Make MLB Debut With Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals are getting to see some of their top prospects get a taste of Major League Baseball to close out the 2023 season.

Outfielder Jordan Walker has been receiving playing time for the majority of the season, shortstop Masyn Winn finally got the call last week and there's now an intriguing southpaw expected to debut.

"Drew Rom, the headlining pitching prospect the Cardinals received from Baltimore in the Jack Flaherty trade, will start for St. Louis on Monday against Pittsburgh," The Athletic's Katie Woo tweeted Sunday.

Rom's season-long stats are not impressive but he's been suburb in his limited opportunities with the Cardinals organization. 

The 23-year-old is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA, 18-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .056 batting average against and 0.55 WHIP in 11 innings for Triple-A Memphis. 

On the year, Rom is 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 97 innings -- all in Triple-A. He has a top-notch ability to generate swings and misses but struggled with command issues when employed by the Orioles. 

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound hurler already was on the 40-man roster, making him an easy player to call up. Matthew Liberatore experienced some back tightness after his last start and will be pushed back to Wednesday.
