Top prospect Adley Rutschman to make Orioles debut vs. Rays

Catcher Adley Rutschman is set to make his debut Baltimore Orioles debut Saturday, three years after he was picked first overall in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Rutschman, 24, is ranked as MLB's top prospect and competed for a spot on the Orioles' Opening Day roster before a triceps injury derailed his chances. After working through a rehab assignment, Rutschman was called up to the majors by the Orioles for a game at Camden Yards against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rutschman was the 2018 College World Series Most Outstanding Player and 2019 Golden Spikes Award winner during his time with the Oregon State Beavers. In his final collegiate season, Rutschman batted .411 with 17 home runs and 58 RBI in 57 games.

Last year, Rutschman batted .285 in the minors, splitting his time between the Double-A Bowie Baysox and Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

The Orioles — who currently sit last place in the AL East with a 16-24 record — have relied on Robinson Chirinos and Anthony Bemboom behind the plate this season. Chirinos is batting .139 and Bemboom is batting .115.
