Report: Giants to sign Justin Smoak after release from Brewers

The San Francisco Giants don't necessarily need help at first base, but the club is set to sign a former member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization as they gear up for the postseason.

According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, the Giants are signing Justin Smoak and may start him at the club's alternate training site before activating him.

The Brewers released Smoak on Tuesday after designating him for assignment last week. The 33-year-old hit .186 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 33 games for Milwaukee this season.

With the Brewers claiming Daniel Vogelbach off waivers last week, there was no room for Smoak and his struggling bat.

Before joining the Brewers, Smoak played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. He'll join a Giants infield that includes Brandon Belt, Pablo Sandoval, Joey Bart, Wilmer Flores, Evan Longoria and Brandon Crawford.

San Francisco is 22-21 on the season, and while there's no hope of them winning the division, they're well on their way to earning a playoff spot in the NL West.
