When the Boston Red Sox claimed Jose Iglesias off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels in early September, many Sox fans immediately had flashbacks to the early 2010s.

Reason being, Iglesias was a member of the Red Sox organization from 2011 to 2013.

It seemed like his days in a Red Sox uniform were over, but the 2021 season provided Iglesias and Boston with an unexpected reunion.

Truthfully, most fans didn’t have very high expectations for the 31-year-old this time around.

But Iglesias made the most of his opportunity with the Red Sox in 2021.

He was one of the team’s most reliable players over the final month of the regular season, and there’s no telling where the club would have landed without him.

Unfortunately, Iglesias wasn’t on Boston’s roster on Sept. 1, so he’s ineligible to play in the postseason.

His year is done.

But that’s no excuse to overlook the impact he made on this team.

Iglesias’s performance with the Red Sox this season was admirable.

Iglesias Was A Machine During His Time With The Red Sox In 2021

Iglesias has never been known for his offense.

Rather, he often makes flashy plays in the infield and adds value with his glove.

So, the Red Sox likely weren’t expecting the one-time All-Star to join the team and make a big offensive impact.

But that’s exactly what he did.

Over 23 games with Boston, Iglesias batted a whopping .356.

He posted an on-base percentage of .406, slugging percentage of .508, and OPS+ of 142.

At one point, he managed a 12-game hitting streak.

During the streak, he batted .405 with a 1.125 OPS and six extra-base-hits.

He caught fire and never cooled off, and that was exactly what the Red Sox needed.

Although He Can’t Compete In The Postseason, Iglesias Deserves A Ring

It’s a shame that Iglesias can’t compete in the 2021 playoffs, but he’ll surely be cheering on the Red Sox from home.

If Boston wins it all, Iglesias will get a well-deserved World Series ring.

Truthfully, he should already have one.

He began the 2013 season as a member of the Red Sox organization, but he was traded to the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline that year.

Boston, of course, won the World Series that season, and Iglesias’ Tigers fell short.

He surely wishes he was never dealt from the Red Sox that year, but he has a shot at getting a ring this time around.

Wrap-Up

Iglesias’s performance with the Red Sox in 2021 will likely do him wonders free agency.

A month ago, the veteran was probably wondering what his future in the league was going to look like.

But after his stint with Boston, there’s no doubt that he’ll attract interest from some teams this offseason.

Maybe the Red Sox will even give him a look in the offseason.

He’s clearly a good fit with the organization, and he’s already a fan favorite for his contributions to this year’s team.

Only time will provide a real answer, but it’s certainly an interesting possibility.

That said, the Red Sox organization likely isn’t focused on the offseason right now.

Boston has a chance to compete for another World Series title, and it all starts tomorrow night in the Wild Card Game against the New York Yankees.
