Pitching prospect Jimmy Robbins has been traded to the Texas Rangers
John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Blue Jays have made a trade.

It was reported by MLB Trade Rumors on Wednesday evening that the Blue Jays were sending left-handed pitching prospect Jimmy Robbins to the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash.

Robbins was selected in the 20th-round of the 2019 draft, or 597th overall. He made his organization debut in 2019 as a 21-year-old, pitching 19 innings and posting a 2.84 ERA and a 3.26 FIP, along with a 28.2 K% and a 3.5 BB% in two different rookie leagues.

Like all minor leaguers, he missed all of the 2020 season, before missing the 2021 season due to injury. However, he returned in 2022 and pitched incredibly well between Single-A, High-A, and Double-A. That season, he posted a 2.59 ERA and a 3.62 FIP in 76.1 innings pitched, along with a 30.2 K% and a 9.8 BB%.

His best stretch of that season came in Double-A, where he finished his final five games of the season with a 1.52 ERA and a 3.33 FIP in 23.2 innings pitched, along with a 26.8 K% and a 6.2 BB%, by far the lowest at any level that season. One of the most memorable moments from the 2022 season is when he struck out 11 batters in a late July game with the Vancouver Canadians.

The 2023 season wasn’t as kind to the left-handed pitcher, as he finished with a 4.67 ERA and a 4.45 FIP in 86.2 innings pitched with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. His K% dropped to 21.9%, while his BB% increased to 13.8%. Robbins also pitched in Triple-A that season, pitching 6.2 innings but allowing 13 runs.

Robbins was invited to the big league camp in Spring Training, where he pitched just 2.1 innings but struck out four batters. So far in 2024, he’s pitched just 2.1 innings and has spent the majority of the time on the development list. The Blue Jays have a lot of pitchers in the upper minors, so trading Robbins to a team that’ll give him more of an opportunity.

We here at Blue Jays Nation wish nothing but the best for Robbins.
