Padres Poach Intriguing Right-Hander From Red Sox Amid Offseason Turnover

The Boston Red Sox's prime objective this winter is to bolster the pitching staff from top to bottom.

Boston will now have one more roster spot to fill as the San Diego Padres acquired yet another former member of the Red Sox, though this new addition wasn't nearly as notable as the Xander Bogaerts or Michael Wacha signings last offseason.

"Red Sox roster move: right-handed pitcher Logan Gillaspie claimed off waivers by the Padres," MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported Wednesday. "40-man roster now at 38."

Gillaspie had a 6.00 ERA with an 8-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a .350 batting average against in nine innings pitched across 11 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season.

Boston claimed the 26-year-old off waivers on Sept. 4 but he did not make an appearance in Boston. He did have four impressive outings for the Worcester Red Sox, logging 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Gillaspie posted a 4.20 ERA in 40 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level in 2023.

Those numbers are in line with his career Major League Baseball production -- a 4.10 ERA in 26 1/3 innings since debuting in 2022.

Losing Gillaspie won't be a reason for the Red Sox to hit the panic button, as he is a depth arm. Boston will have plenty of time to find his replacement.
