The Oakland A’s have been a joke on the field for the entire 2023 MLB season. So it’s only fitting that the franchise is getting absolutely roasted for its retirement gift to retiring MLB legend Miguel Cabrera.

Detroit arrived in Oakland on Thursday for a four-game series as the regular season draws to an end. Cabrera’s career is also coming to an end, as this will be his final year playing professional baseball.

Several teams have presented Cabrera with gifts upon his final appearance in their respective stadiums. Oakland was no different, presenting the 12-time MLB All-Star with a bottle of wine.

That’s a nice gift, right? But after the A’s posted the photo, someone took to Google to search the price tag of the bottle — a 2020 bottle of Caymus Cabernet Suavignon.

The bottle rings up at a whopping $80. Granted, that might be an expensive bottle for a lot of us, but for an MLB team? It comes across as pretty cheap.

But, it does seem pretty fitting. Oakland is nowhere near the most profitable MLB organization, so it’s appropriate that they handed out a bottle of wine that came in under $100.

For what it’s worth, the A’s really didn’t have to get Cabrera anything. Maybe that would’ve got less attention than an $80 bottle of wine.

While Cabrera didn’t play well in Thursday’s game — going 0-for-3 with a strikeout — but the Tigers got the last laugh. Detroit posted a 7-3 victory over the A’s to begin the series.

Both the Tigers and Athletics have struggled this season and both will end the year with records under .500.

Miguel Cabrera enjoyed incredible MLB career

Cabrera has enjoyed a lengthy MLB career and has been a tremendous hitter in two decades in the sport. He started his career with the Florida Marlins (2003-07) but has spent a majority of his time in the big leagues with the Tigers (2008-23).

He’s earned 12 All-Star appearances and won seven Silver Slugger awards. Cabrera was also a two-time AL MVP and won a World Series rings with the Marlins in 2003.

Cabrera has accumulated more than 3,000 hits and 500 home runs during his career. He’ll undoubtedly find his way into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at some point in the future.
