Mets Claim Veteran Infielder From Diamondbacks
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets are adding to their already strong infield depth by plucking players from the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

On Friday, the Mets claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Diamondbacks.

Castillo, 26, received just one at-bat in 2023 for the Diamondbacks. But in 2022, he made his major league debut and appeared in 96 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his big-league action with the Pirates, Castillo slashed .206/.251/.382 with a .633 OPS, 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Castillo was actually a member of the New York Yankees organization in 2021, but was traded with Hoy Park in the deal that landed star reliever Clay Holmes in the Bronx.

Castillo was once a player that was deemed to have potential. He will likely be an upper minor league level depth piece in the infield for the Mets in 2024.
