Mets assistant general manager Zack Scott to serve as acting GM

The New York Mets were left without a general manager after they fired Jared Porter on Jan. 19 shortly after lewd text messages that Porter sent a female reporter were made public.

On Wednesday, the Mets officially promoted assistant general manager Zack Scott to the role of acting general manager.

Scott spent 17 years with the Boston Red Sox organization and worked his way up from once serving as an intern to the job of assistant general manager and the person responsible for overseeing the club's analytics and scouting departments. The Mets hired the 43-year-old as vice president and assistant general manager in December.

"Zack has plenty of championship experience to draw upon," Mets president Sandy Alderson said in the prepared statement. "He has been an integral part of our decision-making processes since his arrival. The entire baseball operations staff, including myself, will continue to work collaboratively."

Scott will now be tasked with getting All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor to sign a long-term deal, preferably before spring training gets underway. The Mets acquired Lindor and right-hander Carlos Carrasco from the Cleveland Indians earlier this month, and Lindor is set to hit free agency after the 2021 season.
