Patrick Breen / USA TODAY NETWORK

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has been on a tear to start the 2024 season.

With a solo home run in the fifth inning of tonight’s game against the Colorado Rockies, Gurriel became the first player in Diamondbacks’ history to go yard in the first three games of a season. The D-backs (2-0) still trailed the Rockies (0-2) 7-4 after the blast.

The RBI from the homer put him up to eight RBIs already, setting a new franchise record through three games.

Gurriel had already had an RBI double earlier tonight. The home run moved up to 2-3 on the night with 2 RBIs.

On the season, Gurriel is now slashing .500 with a 1.871 OPS. He went 3-5 with a home run and five RBIs in the Diamondbacks’ 16-1 Opening Day victory over the Rockies Thursday. Yesterday, he finished 1-4 with a solo home run in a 7-3 D-backs victory.

The Diamondbacks surprisingly made the money work to bring back Gurriel, who was named to his first All-Star Game last season, on a a three-year, $42 million contract this offseason.

Last season, Gurriel Jr. hit 24 home runs and drove in 82 runs in his first season in Arizona. The 30-year-old posted a .261 batting average and .463 OPS.

Now, he is on pace for 162 home runs and 432 RBIs.
