LaMonte Wade’s homer isn't enough in Giants 3-2 loss to Dodgers
USA TODAY Sports

The SF Giants lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in extra innings on Sunday night, falling to 77-79 on the season in front of a national television audience. The Giants fell to five games back of the final National League Wild Card as the final remnants of their postseason chances dwindle. They are also now tied with the San Diego Padres for third place in the NL West.

Ryan Walker opened for the Giants and held the Dodgers scoreless in the first inning before handing the ball to another rookie, Tristan Beck, in the second. Beck stumbled out of the gate, surrendering a double to J.D. Martinez followed by a two-run homer by outfielder James Outman before the end of the second.

However, the Stanford alum quickly found his rhythm and only allowed two more hitters to reach base on singles across 4.1 innings of work. The Giants seemingly remain hesitant to let Beck work as a traditional starter, but it's hard to see a reason not to give him another opportunity to start in the final week of the season.

The Giants offense was stymied early by Dodgers starting pitcher Lance Lynn for most of the late afternoon game. Lynn worked around baserunners throughout the game but kept San Francisco off the scoreboard in five of his six innings of work. In the top of the fifth, though, recently called-up Tyler Fitzgerald led off the inning with a single before LaMonte Wade Jr. sat on a 1-0 fastball from Lynn up in the zone. Wade launched his 17th home run of the season, tying the game 2-2.

Lynn entered the day with a 5.92 ERA (5.54 FIP) on the season, but he allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts on the day. Lynn induced 15 swinging strikes, but to the credit of San Francisco's hitters, they generated plenty of hard contact against him. However, as has been the case for most of the second half, the Giants were unable to string hits together and come through in clutch situations.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler entrusted relievers Alex Wood and Luke Jackson after Beck left the game, and they kept the Dodgers from scoring through the eighth inning.

Dodgers close Evan Phillips entered in the top of the ninth inning and hit Michael Conforto with a pitch to lead off the inning. Then, Marco Luciano singled through the right side of the infield to put two runners on base for Blake Sabol. The backup catcher successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt to push pinch-runner Heliot Ramos and Luciano to second and third. However, Phillips induced a shallow flyout from Fitzgerald and struck out Mitch Haniger to retire the side.

Tyler Rogers worked around a one-out walk to Will Smith in the bottom of the ninth inning to push the game to extra innings. With the ghost runner starting the inning on second base, former Giants reliever Shelby Miller took the mound for Los Angeles.

Miller struck out J.D. Davis to start the inning before intentionally walking Joc Pederson. Then, he induced what should have been a routine fly out from Thairo Estrada. However, Dodgers center fielder Enrique Hernandez could not locate the ball, allowing it to fall. With the bases loaded and one out, Kapler pinch-hit for Ramos with Patrick Bailey. Bailey hit a hard ground ball up the middle that bounced off Miller and turned into an incredible inning-ending double play by shortstop Chris Taylor and first baseman Freddie Freeman.

So, only needing to score the ghost runner from second base, the Dodgers were in prime position to win in the bottom of the tenth. The Giants deployed closer Camilo Doval, but he was unable to hold Los Angeles scoreless. Pinch-hitter Kolten Wong moved the runner to third with a slow ground out and Taylor drove in the winning run with a line drive hit to right-center field.

The SF Giants finished their final road trip of the season 2-8. They began the trip in a driver's seat to reach the playoffs but now return home in need of victories and several other teams to collapse in the final week of the season. They will begin a three-game series against the San Diego Padres tomorrow night at Oracle Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM Pacific in a battle between aces Blake Snell and Logan Webb.
