Ex-Yankees All-Star Reportedly Receiving Interest From Eight Teams; Not New York

One former member of the New York Yankees likely will be playing elsewhere in 2024.

At one point Luis Severino was one of the top starting pitchers in the American League but injuries have derailed his career over the last few seasons. He struggled in 2023 with a 6.65 ERA across 19 starts and now is a free agent looking for a new home.

He has spent his entire eight-year big league career with the Yankees but it sounds like his time in New York is over. Severino reportedly is garnering interest from at least eight teams right now in free agency, but the Yankees aren't expected to be one, according to The Athletic's Brendan Kuty.

"Source says Luis Severino's rehab (oblique) has gone well, he's back to throwing currently and is feeling good, and there's been interest in him already from as many as 8 teams," Kuty said. "The Yankees aren't believed to be one of them."

Severino is a two-time All-Star and if he's fully healthy in 2024 could be a very intriguing low-cost option with high upside. Although he struggled in 2023, he was impressive in 2022. He only made 19 starts but compiled a 3.18 ERA across 102 innings pitched. His best stretch of baseball certainly was the 2017 and 2018 seasons where he earned both of his All-Star nods, but he's just 29 years old and could get back to that level of success. 

If Severino can stay healthy -- and it's a big if -- he could be a very solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter in a rotation with upside. It's unclear exactly who has shown interest but it's clear Severino won't be back in New York.
