Dodgers Snatch Inconsistent Right-Handed Reliever From Red Sox Off Waivers

The Boston Red Sox lost a potential bullpen arm Friday night. 

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed right-handed relief pitcher Jake Reed from Boston on Friday night. Reed never actually took the mound for the Red Sox but was claimed by the team off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. 

The 30-year-old was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday as the team made room on the 40-man roster for young prospects Ceddanne Rafaela, Brandon Walter, Chris Murphy, David Hamilton, and Wilyer Abreu before the Rule 5 protection deadline. 

Reed was drafted in the 40th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Chicago White Sox and made his MLB debut in 2021 with Los Angeles. In two seasons, Reed has pitched for the Dodgers, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles. 

Through 28 games pitched Reed has tallied a 2-1 record and 5.74 ERA while striking 23 batters in 26 2/3 innings pitched. Reed's best pitching performance has come as a member of the Dodgers and in 11 games has totaled 10 innings pitched and a 2.70 ERA along with seven strikeouts. 

Reed at one point seemed poised to battle for a spot in the Boston bullpen, but now likely will be taking the hill at Dodger Stadium when the 2023 MLB season comes around. 

The Red Sox haven't made many moves yet this offseason, but it certainly doesn't sound like it isn't from a lack of trying.
