Detroit Tigers Dump Pitcher Devin Sweet Right After Picking Him Up Off Waivers

The Detroit Tigers have designated right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet for assignment, the team announced Monday morning.

The move was made in correspondence with Detroit adding infielder Colt Keith to its 40-man roster. The Tigers signed Keith – the No. 22 prospect in baseball – to a six-year contract extension on Sunday.

Sweet was a member of the Tigers organization for less than two weeks, as they only claimed him off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Jan. 18.

Sweet’s time with the Giants was also brief, considering they picked him up off waivers from the Oakland Athletics one month earlier on Dec. 18. The righty wasn’t with the A’s for long, either, joining them off the waiver wire via the Seattle Mariners in September.

The 27-year-old reliever made his MLB debut with the Mariners in 2023, appearing in two games before he was let go. Sweet pitched five more games for the Athletics in September.

On the season, Sweet went 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA, 1.846 WHIP and -0.3 WAR.

Sweet spent the previous six years in the Mariners’ farm system, going 23-19 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.204 WHIP and 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Just this past season, Sweet went 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.023 WHIP and 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

Now, for the fourth time in as many months, Sweet is looking for a new home. He will once again hit the waiver wire, unless the Tigers find a way to trade him in the next few days.
