David Ortiz shooting suspect reportedly killed in Dominican Republic

A man accused of helping plan the June 2019 shooting of former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz in Santo Domingo was killed Sunday in the Dominican Republic, according to Dominican newspaper Listin Diario.

Luis Alfredo Rivas-Clase, also known as "The Surgeon," was reportedly shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Santiago. He was driving and was pursued by gunmen in another vehicle, who fired several shots in front of the Colinas Mall complex, according to the newspaper.

Fourteen people were arrested in Ortiz's shooting. Rivas-Clase was the 15th suspect police were looking for in connection with the incident.

Ortiz was shot in the lower back and underwent several surgeries in the Dominican Republic and the United States to repair his injuries. Authorities says he was sitting next to the intended victim of the shooting and was not himself the target.

Ortiz has since returned to making broadcast appearances and continues to return to his native Dominican Republic for various reasons, including charity work.

The 45-year-old spent 14 seasons with the Boston Red Sox from 2003-16, winning three World Series, a World Series MVP, ALCS MVP and seven Silver Slugger Awards in addition to being named a 10-time All-Star and Home Run Derby champion.
