Cubs' Justin Steele Exits Early with Injury

On Thursday, Chicago Cubs ace Justin Steele exited his Opening Day start against the Texas Rangers with an apparent leg injury.

Cruising to what looked like another habitual quality start for Steele, the lefty had already collected six strikeouts in just 4.2 innings.

However, in the fifth inning after fielding a bunt awkwardly off of Rangers outfielder Leody Taveras' bat, Steele laid on the ground for a few minutes holding his left hamstring. He eventually walked off the field on his own accord, exiting the ballgame early.

It’s unsure what exactly the extent of Steele’s injury is, but early reports indicate left hamstring tightness. There is nothing in the report mentioning a pulled hamstring or torn hamstring, so maybe Steele has lucked out. If the Cubs plan to make any push for the NL Central crown this season, it’s crucial they have their ace present for it.

Be sure to follow Cubs On Tap for an update on Steele’s injury. As of now, it doesn't appear too serious. However, if he is to miss a start, the Cubs will likely need to use a bullpen game, or call up someone like Ben Brown to make a spot start in his place.
