Cardinals Versatile Star Had Season-Ending Surgery As Team Retools For 2024

The St. Louis Cardinals are trying to recover and move forward with the remainder of this tumultuous season following the difficult losses at the trade deadline.

It's safe to say that after losing Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks, Chris Stratton, Paul DeJong and Jack Flaherty, the Cardinals are looking to stop the bleeding of losing valuable talents. Unfortunately, recent reports indicate that St. Louis has lost another talent for the remainder of this season.

"News: Brendan Donovan is set to undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday," The Athletic's Katie Woo tweeted Wednesday.

The versatile second baseman was moved to designated hitter after complaining about right forearm soreness at the end of June. For most of July, Donovan was only allowed to hit and was restricted to a no-throw program.

Despite making efforts to return to the field, Donovan's flexor tendon in his throwing arm would never recover and he's now faced with a season-ending surgery to repair the injury.

Donovan has had an above-average second season in the league hitting .281 with 22 extra-base hits including 11 home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .781 OPS in 95 games for the St. Louis.

Although this disappointing injury update is yet another hard pill to swallow for the Cardinals, it's expected that Donovan will recover quickly enough to be fully healthy for the 2024 season. He'll have an early head start on the offseason to ensure that happens.
