Cardinals Reportedly Reached Out To Frontline Starter For Possible Reunion
Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

For the St. Louis Cardinals to bounce back from their tumultuous 2023 season, they'll need to land at least two more high-quality starting pitchers.

After signing right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson and reuniting with Lance Lynn earlier this week, the Cardinals are still without top starters in their rotation.

The Cardinals need at least two reliable starters to bolster their rotation and the return of a former St. Louis hurler might just be a solution.

The Cardinals have reportedly reached out to left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery's agents for a potential reunion, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

Montgomery posted a 10-11 record with a 3.20 ERA, 166-to-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .247 batting average against and 1.19 WHIP in 188 2/3 innings pitched between the Cardinals and Texas Rangers last season.

The highly sought-after pitcher is projected to land a massive contract this offseason after impressing with a stellar performance throughout the Rangers' 2023 playoffs run. Montgomery recorded a 3-1 record with a 2.90 ERA and 17 strikeouts in six appearances to help the Rangers win their first World Series.

The Cardinals' disappointing 2023 season led to Montgomery being traded away at the trade deadline but a reunion has remained in sight

St. Louis will likely have to outbid the Rangers and the New York Yankees -- Montgomery's other former ballclub -- but luckily, the Cardinals have set themselves up to do so with the low-cost contracts of Gibson and Lynn.

St. Louis will need to spend big money this offseason if they are looking to revive their rotation for 2024 as they still need to fill the top two holes in their starting rotation -- Montgomery would fill one of those voids.

Montgomery returning to St. Louis is certainly on the table but the Cardinals will have to dig into their pockets to make that happen.
