Blue Jays' George Springer leaves game vs. Rays with ankle injury

Toronto Blue Jays center fielder George Springer left Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with an ankle injury.

Springer fell backward awkwardly into the center-field wall while attempting a leaping grab to rob Tampa Bay's Brandon Lowe of a base hit in the bottom of the second inning.

Springer reached his feet, seemingly favoring his left leg.

Trainers attended to Springer, who initially stayed in the game before leaving in the third inning; he did not return.

According to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae, the Blue Jays said Springer was pulled from the game with a left ankle sprain.

This season for the Blue Jays, Springer is batting .283 with a .344 on-base percentage and a .531 slugging percentage. He has 32 hits, seven home runs and 18 RBI in 31 games.

Springer is in the second season of a six-year, $150 million contract signed with Toronto in 2021.

Springer has 29 home runs and 68 RBI in a season-plus with Toronto, batting .269, with a .350 OBP and .549 SLG.
